Abstract: | In the present study aluminium refinery residue (ARR), that is, solid waste generated in the production of alumina also known as red mud, was stabilized with ground granular blast furnace slag (GGBS), silica modulus and Na2O content. The prime chemical composition of aluminium refinery residue is Fe2O3, Al2O3, SiO2 and Na2O. ARR is a highly alkaline waste. This study describes laboratory study, and the characterization of ARR can be utilized in the materials which are used for road construction. The unconfined compression strength tests were conducted on various proportions of mixes of ARR and GGBS 80% + 20%, 75% + 25% and 70% + 30% and silica modulus (0.5, 1 and 1.5) for different Na2O content. The UCS specimens were cured for 0, 7 and 28 days to observe the effect of longstanding curing. Based on the laboratory investigations, it was found that 75% ARR + 25% GGBS with 4% Na2O content increases MDD and decreases OMC content. The most appropriate mix 75% AAR + 25% GGBS with 1 silica modulus was observed with a 308.6% increase in UCS value for 28 days of curing. Higher strength is achieved if longer curing periods allowed. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. |
